In 2024, we had the exciting opportunity to take part in a truly unique project—designing and implementing the habitat for a brand-new 140-acre lake in southern Alabama. This wasn’t just about creating a good fishing opportunity; it was about creating something extraordinary—a lake designed to thrive, bring the family together, and stand as a legacy for generations to come.
The vision behind the project was clear: to create a lake that would not only grow trophy bass but also provide the perfect setting for unforgettable fishing experiences. To make that dream a reality, we started crafting a habitat plan that would give the lake’s fish population every opportunity to flourish.
We installed spawning beds lined with artificial grass to improve fry survivability, ensuring future generations of bluegill have the perfect start. Hundreds of Mossback habitats were placed throughout the lake at key fishing hotspots to offer cover for bluegill and give bass prime staging zones. Additionally, we built and installed UglyTree habitats, known for being ideal homes for bluegill. Through intentional placement of habitat, we worked to develop spawning areas, travel channels, and staging areas for forage fish as well as predators.
The challenges we experienced as part of completing a large-scale project such as this one helped the team grow and develop their skills. With such a large team involved, communication was imperative to keep things moving forward and ensure that work got coordinated effectively and completed in a timely manner. By breaking the work into three teams, each with dedicated leaders and responsibilities, we kept the project progressing at a steady rate. On account of this, we finished the project a day earlier than expected; It’s something we’re incredibly proud of and speaks to the dedication of the whole team.
As the lake continues to fill, we expect to see continued positive results and will be closely monitoring its progress. This habitat plan is built to encourage remarkable bass growth and create countless fishing hotspots. It’s the kind of place that will offer both a peaceful getaway and the thrill of a catch for the lake’s lifetime.
This lake is about so much more than fishing. It’s a place where a family can gather to make memories—a quiet retreat to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. It’s a space where traditions can be built, where kids and grandkids can learn to fish, and where the simple joys of nature can be celebrated. It’s a lasting gift, a landmark that will hold its value not just in terms of property but in the countless moments it will help create.
