This year, we embarked on an exciting project to develop a large-scale trout fishery on a multi-lake property in Idaho. The client’s vision, to create a diverse fishery capable of producing trophy-sized trout, gave us a unique opportunity to manage trout in an environment with water temperatures to sustain populations year-round. To achieve this, we’ve undertaken both the construction of new lakes and the enhancement of existing ones, creating a basis for a world-class fishing experience.
The project began with in-depth consultation and planning, focusing on the construction of three additional lakes and the development of management strategies for the property’s existing lakes. Unique considerations had to be addressed, particularly the watershed’s seasonal dynamics. Many proposed pond locations experience heavy inflow during snowmelt and significantly reduced inflow during the rest of the year. After careful evaluation, we planned the construction of two ponds over three acres.
For the existing ponds, we implemented a comprehensive maintenance and management strategy designed to optimize conditions for growing trophy trout and enhance aggressiveness. This plan includes rigorous feeding protocols, vegetation control measures, and an advanced stocking plan. In addition to managing the established Yellowstone cutthroat trout population, we planned to stock rainbow trout in some ponds, chosen for their higher growth potential, aggression, and enhanced fishing appeal. To diversify the fishery, tiger trout stocking is also planned, adding a unique and challenging fishing opportunity for the client and family.
This project has been an excellent opportunity to integrate new lake construction with holistic property management. By leveraging our expertise, we’ve developed a cohesive plan that ensures the newly constructed lakes and existing ponds are designed to be easily managed for the client’s goals. The strategic design not only aligns with the client’s goals but also allows us to collect valuable data on trout development under controlled conditions designed to support trophy growth.
Looking forward, we anticipate this project will deliver an exceptional and diverse trout fishing experience, becoming a highlight of the property for generations.
